Molly Rosenblum, retired cartoonist (readers will lol at the 29 cartoons scattered throughout the book), is an expert at not getting over the loss of her husband, Seymour. But Molly’s funk is rudely interrupted when she finds herself suspected of committing murder in the handicapped dressing room at Marshalls.

Molly's mood is strangely improved by the prospect of being tossed into the back of a Delray Beach police car. Certainly, her renewed joie de vivre has nothing to do with handsome but arrogant, annoying, clothes horse Harold Golden, who insists on helping her solve the case.

I wanted to like this book because it had so much going for it. A quirky bunch of characters involved in a mystery. Jokes from 50+ women about themselves. A protagonist who's a cartoonist and sees things in comic strips. Myriad references to the Boston area (where I've lived for half my life) and some fun with the Jewishness of Florida... All good stuff.

So, where did it go so horribly wrong?

First off, I had trouble "getting into" the life and tone of the "Fab 5," they seemed so shallow and uninteresting despite their quirkiness. When the sister showed up. they morphed into a senior version of Mean Girls. No one seemed to be someone I would want to spend any time with in real life, despite my love of bargain hunting at off-pricers.

By the end of the first quarter of the book, I really didn't care who committed the murder.

By the end of the first half, I was really tired of the protagonist going on and on about who could have committed the murder and why she didn't think she had.

The second half was more of the same. And more of the same. And, really, more of the same. I really don't know why I finished it (except that I hate to write reviews of books I haven't completely read.) The only redeeming thing I can find about the book was the cartoons (and they were hit or miss.) Elliot/Harold is never fully explained (and why are there no cops in Florida?)

I fear this book is the beginning of a series...

The Secret Life of Molly Rosenblum edition by Elliot Nash Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A fun and engrossing story, with a good mystery wrapped in tongue-in-cheek humor. As if that weren't enough, the main character, Molly, shares her insights with excellent original cartoons throughout the book, and although the story is told in first person from Molly's point of view, the author is a main character in the book and even a main suspect. The ladies' fascination with sex seemed a little over the top, but then, as Molly said, maybe it's because they weren't getting any. Besides, everyone is exaggerated here. I found The Secret Life of Molly Rosenblum original, funny, and well written.
Such a great new take on the genre. Loved the cartoons.

Molly and her friends make a fun story. Great setting as well as good writing and a tight plot. I would love to know who the author really is. Visit the authors page and you will understand what I mean. In the spirit of Richard Castle Elliot Nash who also is a character in the book is listed as the author.

There is quite a bit of tongue in cheek humor in this book but I am a big fan of subtle humor so I enjoyed that aspect as well.

If you want to read a smart and funny mystery you will not be disappointed in this one. Hopefully there are more to come Mr. Nash whoever you are.
Ugh, I truly hope that if someone in my sphere is murdered and I know that one of my four life-long friends killed that person, that I would be sad, even devastated by the news, unlike the protagonist of this story. In case you are still unclear, I did not like this story, and I tried - really, really hard. So many things were wrong with the story - the above mention nonchalance of one of her friend's guilt, the total lack of police, the total trust of a stranger while simultaneously suspected him of murder, and the obsession with discount shopping as a guilty pleasure (because if you can a woman is always supposed to shop at Saks).
I tripped over the listing for this book and first thought it was a comic book. I figured, what the heck, let's see what's inside . . . and boy was I surprised! Is it a mystery? A satire? A graphic novel? Or something else, something original???
Maybe I identify with the characters because I too shop at a national discount retail store, and have recently purchased a condo in FL (though it is on the gulf coast), or maybe because I have always wanted to live in a turret ...but I was sucked in and happily so from the get-go! I love the cartoons and I love the girls (even over 60 we still call ourselves girls) and their no b.s. friendship and I can't wait to see what surprises await me as I keep turning (or in the case of my Fire, swiping) pages. Of course, I started reading on the beach . . . and after heavy literary fiction and devastating memoirs, this book is just what the doctor ordered. It made me laugh and as I curl up with Molly and her friends before bedtime, I know more laughs and surprises are in store. And I promise, if the second half of the book is as witty, and clever and laugh out loud funny as the first half, I will be giving that fifth star.
"Murder is such an ugly word, especially among friends."

So begins this wacky ride of a murder mystery. Molly Rosenblum is a cartoonist. She lives in Delray Beach, Florida, with four other retired ladies, herself and several others of which are widowed. They call themselves The Fabulous Five (FF, for short). They all bought condos in a oceanfront building called The Sandcastle.

The problems start when Jane's (one of the FF) sister, Cynthia comes to visit. Nobody likes Cynthia. But when Cynthia arrives, all of the ladies are surprised to find that she has, well, to put it simply, put on a bit of weight. That night at dinner, however, she blurts out that she has slept with all of their husbands. The next day, Cynthia dies, mysteriously, while trying on a pink sweater at a local Marshall's. She has obviously been poisoned. Molly was in the fitting room with her. Everyone suspects Molly. Molly suspects everyone else.

This is a delightful, fast-paced, murder mystery, and a very fun read. It does get a little, shall we say, "racy," at times, but you might expect that from a group of sixty-ish widowed ladies living in community. (
